II.
Some of you are already aware of the plight of Stoo
Odom's family in the wake of Katrina and Rita. The
short version: Stoo's dad in Hattiesburg, MS, was
minus a front porch for a month, is out some cash, but
is otherwise okay.
Stoo's mother and stepfather, on the other hand, have
had quite a time of it. Stepdad was in a New Orleans
hospital recovering from surgery of the lower spine
(bone cancer) when Katrina hit. Mom and stepdad spent
4 days in the hospital with no power, no meds and
little food, at times sleeping on the roof. They were
finally airlifted to Houston, where more surgery was
performed just in time for another emergency airlift
to escape Hurricane Rita.
As of this writing, the pair are living in a hospital
room in St. Louis (where there's some family),
physically and emotionally drained. There's an
apartment available for them in the next couple of
days. Stoo went to Houston and Mississippi directly
after Katrina and will be heading to St. Louis and New
Orleans immediately after this tour. Luckily their
house was spared flooding; they'll be returning there
once they're healthy enough to do so, and when good
medical care is again available in New Orleans.
There's so much to tell that it will probably wind up
in a forthcoming written work. Several of you have
already helped out directly; you're fantastic. Many of
you are still asking "what can I do?"
New Orleans is now in the rebuilding stage. The task
at hand is to ensure that it's rebuilt in the
interests of its people and not those of corporate
America. It's gonna be a battle. The following
charities seem to be on the right track. Please check
them out. Thanks again to all.
