G,
By the late 1980s the real core of the music scene that nurtured
my favorite area bands had deteriorated significantly so nearly 20 years
later there is not much memory. Except for a few us prowling about (Russ,
Roger, Eric J., Jed, Paul T., Steve D., etc..), most of the crowd at the G
St. Pub was oblivious to the legendary (to my mind) nature of the visit.
Seeing Steve Wynn play in Davis made my year (I'm stuck in lab 7d/week but
still!). He and I both had bands on Zero Hour Records in the mid 1990s so I
was interested in how that fiasco ultimately affected his momentum because
it all but torpedoed mine (thank god). I'm really happy that with his
status justified by his repertoire, it didn't seem to matter much. He and
his band were so much better at playing Dream Syndicate songs than the last
version of the Dream Syndicate I saw (1988) that I actually got "that
feeling" I got when I first heard Halloween. And honestly, Linda Pitmon's
drumming was so stunningly good I forgot all of the chin-beard sporting
asshole rock I had seen on the very same stage until now. Rock on Steve!
